Pinewood is a residential area on the west side of Prince George, established and settled, with the pine and spruce cover its name suggests.

That cover is the local factor and it is a heavy one. Conifers close to houses put a continuous needle load into gutters, and needles are the awkward kind of debris — they pack into a dense mat that holds water like a sponge and does not shift when you flush it. They have to come out by hand.

In this climate a packed gutter going into winter is the beginning of an ice problem rather than just an overflow problem, which is why the autumn clear is the one that matters here more than the spring one.
