What gutter cleaning actually involves

Clearing the trough is half the job. Confirming the water runs is the other half.

The short version

What to expect

Method
Cleared by hand, not flushed
Downspouts
Checked to run before we leave
Typical frequency
Once a year; twice under conifers
A cleared aluminium gutter running along a shingle roofline, wiped down to bare metal with no needles or debris left in the trough.

By hand, then checked

Gutters get cleared by hand rather than flushed, so debris comes out instead of being pushed into a downspout. Then every downspout is checked to confirm water actually runs before we leave.

Clearing a trough and leaving a blocked downspout just moves the problem along.

What happens when they block

Water overflows at the back edge instead of the front, runs down the fascia and soaks the soffit. That is where rot starts.

The damage is rarely dramatic. It shows up as staining, then soft wood, then a soffit that needs replacing — which is a considerably larger bill than a gutter clean.

After roof moss removal

Everything scrubbed off a roof lands in the gutters. Clearing them is part of finishing a moss removal job properly, not an upsell.

What you are actually buying

This is the standard our crew works to on this job — not a summary written for the website. It is worth reading the second and third lists before you book anyone, ours or anybody else's.

Included as standard

  • The gutters are cleared by hand and the debris goes into a bucket — not flushed down the run and not dropped on the garden.
  • Downspout clearing is included at no extra charge. Each downspout is checked for flow before we leave.
  • The roof is cleared first. Cleaning gutters under a roof still covered in debris just fills them again.
  • If anything is left after the hand clean, the run is rinsed or blown out.
  • Before and after photographs are taken on every job and sent to you.
  • A harness is used for anything above ten feet.
  • A thorough clean-up of the property afterwards, every job.

Not included

  • Awning gutters.
  • Walking a roof where it is not safe to do so.
  • Removing moss from the roof itself.

Quoted separately, if you want it

  • Awning gutters — Not part of a standard clean; quoted separately.

When we stop and call you

Our crew is not allowed to push on through any of these. They stop and phone you rather than press on and make it worse.

  • The gutters cannot be reached safely — by roof pitch, by placement, or by anything else.

Gutter Cleaning: the questions we get

Do you clear the downspouts too?

Yes, at no extra charge. Clearing the trough and leaving a blocked downspout just moves the problem along. We check each one runs before we pack up.

What happens if I leave it?

Water stops draining and finds another route — over the fascia, down the wall, or into the ground next to the foundation.

Is gutter cleaning included with roof moss removal?

Yes. Gutter cleaning is included with roof moss removal, including downspout clearing at no extra charge. A standalone gutter clean is its own service.

Do I need this if I have gutter guards?

Less often, not never. Guards keep the trough clear but needles still collect on top and need clearing off, especially under conifers.

What does a blocked gutter actually cost me here?

On this coast, rot. Soaked fascia and soffit from a winter of overflow, rather than the ice damage they get inland.

Will clearing my gutters stop ice dams?

Not by itself. Ice dams are driven by uneven roof temperatures, often from heat escaping the home. Clearing debris does not fix that heat loss.

Is spring or autumn more important here?

Book around debris buildup and safe access rather than treating either season as an ice-prevention guarantee. Mention frozen gutters when enquiring, and confirm the appropriate timing with the Prince George team.
