Gutter cleaning before and after
The work, step by step
How we clean gutters and downspouts
-
Clear the trough by hand
Debris comes out and into a bag rather than being flushed along into a downspout, which is how a clear-looking gutter ends up with a blocked outlet.
-
Check every downspout
Each one is run and confirmed flowing. Clearing the trough and leaving a blocked downspout just moves the problem along.
-
Look at the fascia and the roof edge
While we are up there we can see whether water has been sitting where it should not. If something needs a roofer rather than us, you will hear about it.
-
Tidy up
Anything that came off the roof or out of the gutter and landed on the ground gets picked up.

Victoria
Before you book
Gutters on this coast fill with two things: conifer needles, and whatever comes off the roof. Douglas fir and cedar shed year round rather than in one autumn drop, so a Greater Victoria gutter does not have a single season where it fills — it fills continuously.
Needles are the awkward part. Leaves sit on top and can be lifted out; needles pack down into a dense mat that holds water like a sponge and does not move when you flush it. That mat sits against the fascia and the roof edge and keeps them wet through the whole rainy season.
More about gutter cleaning
Because the winters are wet rather than frozen, the failure here is rot rather than ice: soaked fascia, soft soffit, and water running down the wall behind the gutter instead of through it. That is slower and quieter than a burst downspout, and it costs more by the time anyone notices.
Everything comes out by hand, then the downspouts get run to confirm the water is actually going somewhere. A gutter that looks clear but does not drain is not clean.
The easiest warning sign is not debris you can see from the ground; it is what happens in the first hard rain. Water spilling behind the trough, a dark line on the fascia, or one corner overflowing while the rest drains normally points to a local blockage or a run that is no longer moving water toward the outlet.
Downspouts deserve the same attention as the open trough. A clear gutter can still overflow if needles have packed into the top elbow or the outlet at the bottom cannot discharge. That is why the check finishes at ground level, where the water leaves the pipe, rather than at the ladder.
Cleaning also separates a blockage from a hardware problem. If water still sits after the debris is gone, the issue may be pitch, a sagging hanger or a joint that has moved. Those are repair questions rather than reasons to flush harder, and identifying that boundary is more useful than leaving a bright trough that still holds water.
Your property
Anywhere with fir or cedar over the roofline, which is most of Saanich — Gordon Head, Cordova Bay, Broadmead, Blenkinsop and Prospect Lake all have heavy needle load. Oak Bay and Fairfield have mature deciduous trees, so those fill hardest in October and November. Sidney and the Peninsula run more open and generally need it less often.
Timing your visit
Twice a year suits most houses under conifers here: once in late autumn after the deciduous drop, and once in spring. A roof under fir or cedar with no guards may want more.
What to know about gutter cleaning
How often do gutters need clearing in Victoria?
Once a year for most homes. Under conifers, twice — needles mat down into a layer that water runs straight over rather than through.
What goes wrong when gutters block?
Water overflows at the back edge instead of the front, runs down the fascia and soaks the soffit. That is where rot starts, and it is expensive.
Do you clear the downspouts too?
Yes, at no extra charge. We clear the downspouts and check every one runs before we leave.
Do gutters need doing after roof moss removal?
Yes — everything we scrub off the roof lands in them. Gutter clearing is part of finishing a moss removal job properly.
You do not need to be home
- Access to the yard
- Gates unlocked
- Pets inside
- An outdoor tap we can use
When we stop and call you
Our crew is not allowed to push on through any of these. They stop and phone you rather than press on and make it worse.
- The gutters cannot be reached safely — by roof pitch, by placement, or by anything else.
Questions we get asked
Do I need this if I have gutter guards?
Less often, not never. Guards keep the trough clear but needles still collect on top and need clearing off, especially under conifers.
What does a blocked gutter actually cost me here?
On this coast, rot. Soaked fascia and soffit from a winter of overflow, rather than the ice damage they get inland.
Do you clear the downspouts too?
Yes, at no extra charge. Clearing the trough and leaving a blocked downspout just moves the problem along. We check each one runs before we pack up.
What happens if I leave it?
Water stops draining and finds another route — over the fascia, down the wall, or into the ground next to the foundation.
Is gutter cleaning included with roof moss removal?
Yes. Gutter cleaning is included with roof moss removal, including downspout clearing at no extra charge. A standalone gutter clean is its own service.
