From ground level, look for visible debris, overflowing sections and water landing where it should not. Note where the problem appears and take a photo safely.

Does gutter cleaning prevent ice dams?

It is not a complete ice-dam solution. Heat loss into the attic can melt roof snow, which refreezes at colder edges and blocks drainage.

Natural Resources Canada explains the relationship between attic heat loss and ice damming. If ice keeps returning, ask a qualified roofing or building-envelope professional about the cause rather than treating every instance as a dirty gutter.

When is a repair the right next step?

If a gutter still leaks or drains poorly after debris is removed, cleaning may not address the cause. Tell us about damage before requesting the work.
